Scores - Orchestra and Chorus

Orchestra and Chorus members can purchase their vocal score or instrumental part at the local music store:

The Chorus Score

Chorus members must have their own vocal score.  The preferred edition is published by Roger Dean Publishing Company, Lorenz Publishing Corporation and edited by Leonard Van Camp.  They are inexpensive and can be ordered through the local music store.

This edition of Messiah is preferred for the Evanston performance for several reasons, both scholarly and practical:

• It was edited from Handel's autograph and conducting scores, so over 100 errors have been corrected that appear in previous editions, including the Schirmer.
• It has been re-engraved in modern notation, giving the printed page a cleaner look and thus making it easier to read.
• It includes measure numbers, which are helpful in rehearsal.
• It includes breath marks and other useful editorial suggestions.
• The keyboard accompaniment is more manageable than the accompaniment found in the Schirmer. 

Chorus members who already own the Schirmer edition, and who choose not to upgrade, will not be completely lost in rehearsal as the pagination and rehearsal letters are the same as the Van Camp.  However, the Schirmer lacks measure numbers, breath marks and other useful editorial suggestions.  Additionally, those using Schirmer will need to write in a few rhythmic and textual corrections.  (See Schirmer vs. Van Camp below)


The Orchestra Score

Orchestra members are responsible for obtaining their own scores.  The preferred score for orchestra is edited by E. Prout and published by G. Schirmer, Inc.  The ECO has used this edition for many years.  They are very inexpensive.
